If you’re a woman and you love fountain pens then I’m quite sure you’ve realized the rarity of finding a woman with the same passion for pens. But has it always been like this? Coming to know about a little history, women used to love fountain pens during the early 1900s, so much so that they even wore fountains around their neck! But even then fountain pens were somewhat associated to be a 'Man's thing'.
I remember coming across this fountain pen ad of the mid-1900s once, which targets the women folks and says “Christmas present hint for women!”. Implying that men admire quality fountain pens. That got me thinking, does liking fountain pens has something to do with masculinity? Can’t women also like to be gifted a fountain pen or buy one for themselves instead? Or ladies didn’t simply like fountain pens? Of course, they do! Maybe not every woman, just like not every man out there is a fan of fountain pens, but there still are and always have been plenty of women who love fountain pens.
When I asked my mom if she ever owned a fountain pen? She recalls being gifted a sleek and shiny silver fountain pen by her uncle once, years ago during her teens. She couldn’t help but fall head over heels for it and treasure it so so much. Until one unfortunate day, someone broke her much-adored pen. After which she never really got a chance to buy one for herself. I wonder how many women never really got to flourish their liking for pens. Either because they were never encouraged or never spoke up about them having a thing for fountain pens.
In past recent years though, there has been a rise in female fountain pen users more than ever. Probably because now they get better exposure, a better chance, or in some cases even encouraged to check out this wonderful hobby. Moreover buying a fountain pen is much easier than before. They also get to choose from pens of various looks and sizes, whichever suits their taste.
Fountain pens after all suit all sorts of personality. Whether the lady is a student, teacher, businesswoman, or housewife. Now, how classy are a woman using a fountain pen! It sure gives an impression of elegance and pure sophistication when they'd bring it out to sign a document, or simply jot down a piece of writing maybe.
In midst of this men populated hobby. Many women have now started to stand eye to eye with men, discussing the pros and cons of certain pens, sharing their love for specific fountains even, as well as having their own collection. Women are also seen quite interested in calligraphy as well.
Talking about their choice, they generally search for something light yet elegant, that won't exert their small hands. Also, women are usually fans of glistening metal, so metallic hints do good. Although color preferences differ from person to person. Women also look for a pen with a screw-in cap, to avoid any mishaps of ink leakage in their purse or dresses.
Whether you’re a woman or a man reading this if you’re into this wonderful hobby, why not encourage other women too, into the love of fountain pen. At least give them a chance to get a taste of it. What if she doesn’t like it? That’s alright, some things are not for everyone. And what if she does like it? Well, then we can all obsess over fountain pens together!
